The city of Istanbul is renowned for its rich abundance of lush gardens and numerous entertainment venues, thanks to Turkey's great attention to preserving the city's beauty and increasing its charm.
On April 6th, air traffic bid farewell to Ataturk Airport, which had provided air navigation services as the main airport in the city of two continents for many decades, as all air traffic services moved to the third Istanbul Airport.
It is well known that the Turkish government had planned to transform Ataturk Airport, with its buildings and grounds, into one of the largest parks and national gardens in Istanbul. So, what is the size of this project? When will it be completed? And what are its main sections?
In this article, we will learn about some details of the Ataturk Airport Park project plan, also known as the Nation's Park, and the most important information about it.
A Detailed Look at the Ataturk Airport Park Project
The "Nation's Park" project, planned to be established on the land of Ataturk Airport, is one of the largest park and service projects in Turkey. Its total area is approximately 8.5 million square meters. About 30% of it is planned to be used for general air navigation purposes, 9% for military purposes, and the remaining 5.2 million square meters will consist of recreational areas, as well as a youth center, a museum, an exhibition city, a visitor accommodation area, a social center, a disaster meeting area, and many other facilities.
The Ataturk Airport Park project and other projects were designed and their engineering plans prepared by Emlak Konut, the government real estate investment partner, which will implement the projects under the supervision of the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. The construction of the entire project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021.
Main Entrance of Ataturk Airport Park
The current main entrance to Ataturk Airport is located near the D100 road, known for its heavy traffic. To provide convenience for vehicles coming to the park and to allow space for bicycles, the entrance will be at the Yesilkoy intersection with the old airport road. The entrance will be equipped with parking lots on the east side, and the adjacent airport administrative buildings will be reorganized to become a science center and an exhibition city. Each of the exhibition city, the science center, the youth center, and the visitor accommodation center will have their own side roads to ease traffic congestion. The project will be connected to existing and future metro stations.
