Mudanya, located north of Bursa city on the coast of the Sea of Marmara, is one of the city's important tourist areas. It is bordered to the west by Karacabey, to the south by Othman Gazi (Osmangazi) and Nilüfer (Nilüfer), and to the east by Gemlik. To the north, it is bordered by the Gulf of Gemlik. The area covers about 346 square kilometers, with a population of around 83,000. The district consists of one town (Trilya), 36 villages, and 8 neighborhoods, and enjoys the moderate climate of the Marmara region. It is about 28 km (20 minutes by road) from the center of Bursa and about an hour by sea from Istanbul.

Economic Activities in Mudanya District, Bursa

Olive cultivation is the main source of income for the residents, along with other agricultural crops such as vegetables, fruits, grains, and industrial crops like sunflowers. Fishing is also present but has declined recently. Import and export make up the largest part of the area's commercial activity, with a significant portion of Bursa's industrial products exported and raw materials imported through its port. There are also some medium and light industries in the area.

The district is one of the greenest areas in Bursa, with about 6,380 hectares of pine and oak forests. These forests contain many other plants used in industry, such as leaves, fibers, and various oils. The annual production of forest crops is about 13,000 cubic meters.

Historical and Tourist Sites in Mudanya, Turkey

The history of the area, once known as Mirilia, dates back to the 7th century BC when it was founded by the Cluphonians. It was occupied by various powers until Macedonian Emperor Philip V destroyed it and built a new city called Montania, from which the current name is derived. The area came under Ottoman rule after being conquered by Sultan Orhan Gazi in 1321 and remained under Ottoman control until the British occupied it after the Treaty of Mudros. However, the British occupation lasted only one day, after which the Greeks took over in June 1920. The Greek occupation lasted two years until the area was liberated in September 1922, followed by the signing of the famous Mudanya Treaty, which ended the Turkish War of Independence in October.

The district contains many landmarks, monuments, and old historic neighborhoods, including churches, mosques, baths, markets, and old quarters, some dating back to the Ottoman era and others even earlier. Among the most significant sites is the Rum Quarter, one of the most historic and attractive areas in Mudanya, designed by the Italian architect Bicirtu, featuring many inns, beautiful wooden houses, and alleys with sea views. Also notable is the old Trilya area, a remnant of the Greeks, interwoven with pine forests and olive groves, dotted with cafes and restaurants.

The district is an important tourist destination in the city due to its stunning nature and rich history. Although its tourism season is short because of its cool summers, it attracts many local and foreign tourists. Day tourism is widespread, as are many chalets and summer houses used for vacations. Since 2012, the area has seen significant development and growth due to increased urbanization, with modern and contemporary real estate projects such as residential complexes and luxury towers spreading throughout its neighborhoods. The area is also witnessing major infrastructure development, making it a leading region in the rapidly growing construction sector. Today, the district, which has become a center for attracting local and foreign investors, is one of the most important areas in Bursa for real estate investment.
