The repair and extension of the railway line between Iraq and Turkey was announced by the Iraqi Minister of Transport, Nasser Bandar. This line connects the city of Baghdad with Mosul, the center of Nineveh Governorate, and finally reaches Turkey.
Iraq begins operating the railway line between Iraq and Turkey
In statements made by the Iraqi Minister of Transport to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), regarding the start of work to operate the railway line between Turkey and Iraq, he said: "This important step came after serious consideration, aiming to restart or extend a railway line linking Baghdad to Turkey."
Bandar indicated that the State of Iraq is seeking to purchase new trains upon completion of the railway line, in addition to having some old trains that will contribute to the new transport operations.
Bandar added: "According to the set plan, the railway work will be completed within two months, as we will connect Al-Faw Port in the south of the country to Turkey." He pointed out the need to repair some bridges that were destroyed by ISIS terrorist gangs.
Bandar continued his statement by presenting the Dry Canal project to the media. This project is a plan that will make Iraq a corridor for all goods coming from Australia and East Asia to Europe, passing through Turkish territory, confirming that many Turkish and Chinese companies have come forward to build this project.
Bandar added that through the Dry Canal project, ships will unload their cargo and goods at Iraqi ports on the Arabian Gulf, which will then be transported to Turkey by land routes, and then continue on to Europe.
Trade exchange via railway lines between Iraq and Turkey
Earlier, the Governor of Nineveh, Mr. Najm Al-Jubouri, said in a statement to the official Al-Sabah newspaper:
"We have set a plan aimed at reducing congestion on the roads, and as a result, work will begin on extending a railway for trains between Mosul in Iraq and Turkey." He added: "The engineering and technical teams, in cooperation with Turkish engineering construction companies, will soon begin laying a new railway line between the two countries."
It is worth mentioning that Iraq relies on land and sea border crossings for trade exchange. The Ibrahim Al-Khalil border crossing in Zakho district, Dohuk Governorate, in the Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq, is the main crossing for trade with Turkey.
Moreover, the railway project is the first of its kind in Mosul, in the context of major economic and investment cooperation and exchange with Turkey.
In a related context, the volume of trade exchange between Turkey and Iraq reached about 17 billion dollars in recent years, and it is planned to increase it to 20 billion in the coming period, especially since Turkey is the main source of goods imported to Iraq.
