Overview of Sultanbeyli District in Istanbul

The history of Sultanbeyli district in Asian Istanbul dates back to ancient times, to the era of the Roman and Byzantine empires. The geographical area, which today lies within the boundaries of Sultanbeyli, including the historic city of Aydos and its castle, as well as the settlements surrounding the Sultanbeyli plain, was an important intermediate stop on the tribal route in ancient times and beyond.

Due to its strategic location, Sultanbeyli has gained and continues to hold a central position throughout history up to the present day.

Because it was on the route to old Istanbul, Sultanbeyli was an entry point to the city that armies had to pass through or conquer first, especially the Turkish armies that organized expeditions to Istanbul before its conquest. Indeed, it was conquered in 1328 AD by order of Sultan Orhan Ghazi.

In 1957, it was decided to establish the village of Sultanbeyli, followed by the creation of an organized settlement center in the middle of the village. The area has continued to prosper, similar to other districts of Istanbul. As a result of rapid construction activities between 1985-1987, Sultanbeyli reached its current state. On December 31, 1987, it was decided to establish a municipality in the village of Sultanbeyli, and the first municipal elections were held on December 26, 1989.

In 1992, Sultanbeyli became an independent (municipality) district, reaching its current status today.

Sultanbeyli consists of a residential and commercial section, and another part characterized by beautiful cityscapes and vast green forests. Therefore, the area is considered one of the richest in Istanbul in terms of natural environmental cover.

The TEM highway passes through Sultanbeyli, connecting it to other districts of the city and neighboring cities.
